There was quite a big leak from the front differential pinion oil seal (
FRC8220) on my 200Tdi Defender that it couldn't be ignored any longer. I suspected a blocked breather pipe so I fitted a new one as well as a new seal at the same time.
The flange (
FRC3002) was quite heavily scored so it should have been replaced really, but you don't know that before you start the job. In hindsight I should have just bought a flange kit to change everything, as I would find on this vehicle that all the flanges with seals were worn.
This 200Tdi diff uses the
FRC8154 mudshield and the pinion has a threaded end that requires a castle nut (3259). I used the old seal to hammer the new seal flush with the housing. It was a satisfing job as the muck covering the area was disgusting. Even though the flange was scored, the seal did work until me and the vehicle parted ways.
