Seven years after last
replacing the clutch cylinders, the clutch pedal was getting lower and lower until a trip to the supermarket had to be aborted because the biting point was disappearing to the extent that I didn't think it'd be there for the return journey.
I had tested the clutch fluid 6 months earlier and it was murkey with 2% water content. At the time I should have expected that the dark clutch fluid was the master cylinder seals failing. Fast forward 6 months and it did eventually failed. Not knowing exactly whether it was the master or slave cylinder that failed, I purchased both. The master cylinder was a new take off Puma part that included the pedal box as a complete assembly; they're the same design on all Defenders. The clutch pedal had been squeaking for a long time and upon removing the pedal box I saw that it was a rusty mess. I dismantled it with a view to replacing the pivot bushes (
272714), but had to bail and use the new pedal box as it was taking too much time. A new flexible hose (
NTC9055) was also used as the whole system was being taken apart anyway.
