I was getting poor reception from the radio, when I knew there was good signal seen in other cars that i'd driven in. Upon investigation I found it was a dodgy rusted connection from two wires that were joined with RF connectors and wrapped in insulation tape by the previous owner.
The aerial was also aftermarket and rusting, so it took a bit of maneuvering to get out. It twisted the wing a bit but I managed to hammer it back flat with a block of wood underneath as a dolly. It'll be covered up by the new aerial so I wasn't too bothered.
For the new aerial I went for a genuine Land Rover aerial
LR030590, as it was hard trying to find good quality aftermarket aerials that weren't over £100 (more than I wanted to spend). I pulled the old cable out through the bulkhead by taping some bailer twine to it, which I then attached to the new aerial's cable and pulled it back through. The aerial base I then tightened with some circlip pliers that happened to fit perfectly. The radio reception is now perfect, that is, when I remember to extend it before driving off!
