The alternator on my 300Tdi Defender was the original and it had started making a loud chirping noise, so it was time for to replace it. The new part I ordered (
AMR4249) came with the older style pulley (
STC1796) instead of the newer style (
STC3202), which was incredibly annoying. I bought a 22mm cranked spanner and I tried to remove the pulley from the old alternator, but it was rounding the nut. I decided to just buy a new pulley of the correct type as the retailer insisted that there was nothing wrong with the fact they had sent an alternator with the wrong pulley for the specified part number.
When it arrived, I put the new pulley onto the new alternator. The hole in the mounting ear was also threaded, which the original wasn't. This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that the threads didn't line up with the engine bracket, so I had to drill them out so I could get the bolt through and tightened. All of the connections were the same, which was a bonus!
The old alternator is in a disgusting state. It's only the bearing that was squeaking so I will clean it up, replace the bearing and use it as a spare on the shelf.
